What is a swag?

A swag is a rolled up portable bed. It has a mattress inserted into a heavy duty, water resistant canvas casing that also houses your sleeping bag and pillow.

Perfect for the outdoors, swags make for a great night’s sleep. Ours will keep you warm on cool nights, as the enclosed air space is quickly heated by your body temperature; yet, unlike a tent, by being exposed to the night air and evening breezes, it’s easy to stay cool on warmer nights.

Do I need a sleeping bag?

Yes, it goes inside the swag. If you don’t have a sleeping bag they can be hired from us for $15 per tour. (Machine washed each time and rated to 5 degrees Celsius).

What do I need to bring?

・space is limited so leave large packs at your accommodation please.

・daypack – to keep with you for everyday use

・overnight pack – to be kept in the trailer during travel.

・comfortable clothes for the three day journey

・comfortable footwear

・sleeping bag*

・a torch*

・a set of warm clothes for nights during cooler months (June-Aug)

・water bottle (can be filled at many locations)

・insect repellent

・cash for possible purchases

*sleeping bags can be hired from us for $15. They are machine washed each trip and rated to 5 degrees celsius.

*pillow can be hired from us for $5 per tour. Washed each trip. (placing your shoes on the ground, under the swag makes an excellent substitute!)

*head torch can be purchased from us for $7. Multi functioned with red light ability and battery included.

What if I have dietary requirements?

Please notify of any dietary requirements or allergies at time of reservation. We do cater for vegetarians and both dinners are free of gluten, however coeliacs may wish to bring their own cereal and bread to supplement breakfast/lunch meals.

Likewise lactose intolerant guests are welcomed to bring own dairy goods that can be stored cold.

What fitness level is required?

No extraordinary level of fitness is required. A medium level of fitness is enough to get the most out of the tours’ activities.

Will I have phone reception?

Most times yes, depending on your carrier. Your guide will let you know of the most opportune reception areas. At times you may get lucky and have no phone or internet disturbance to relaxed evenings around campfires getting to know fellow guests.

Can I charge my phone/camera?

Because of our remote bush camps, there is no electricity to charge appliances in the evenings. There is a chance whilst driving, through the vehicle’s 12V system (cigarette lighter) if leads are compatible. If charging appliances is a concern we recommend bringing a power bank.

What are the pick up/drop off times?

・Cairns city – 7:00am

・Northern beaches – 7:40am

・Port Douglas – 8:30am

Approximate drop off times Day 3 are-

・Northern beaches – 5:45pm

Do I need to reconfirm bookings?

We will contact you, via email, two days prior to departure.

Are there toilets and showers at night?

There are toilet blocks both nights. Bush showers with solar heated water is provided night one. Shower with gravity fed non heated water is provided night two.

How hot/cold does it get?

Conditions here during our dry season are very agreeable. Maximum temperatures on tour are experienced in the west. Day time temperatures often getting above 30 degrees Celsius during warmer months (Oct, Nov, Dec).  Minimum late night/early morning temperatures may drop below 10 degrees Celsius in cooler months (July, August).

Will we see stars at night?

There is an excellent chance we will because at Swags Under Stars we operate during our dry season and by being in places at night with less cloud cover, no light pollution and more elevation we’ve given ourselves the best opportunity to do so.

Plus the Southern Hemisphere has a more favourable view of the concentration of stars at the centre of our galaxy, the Milky Way.

Do you do charters?

Absolutely! You may have some particular interest in certain components of the tour. Whether it’s geology, rainforest plants, old mining towns, fossicking, volcanic craters, birds, astronomy, nocturnal wildlife spotting etc. We are very open and flexible to tailored tours.
